New Zealand Trip Day 5 – Invercargill to Te Anau

Invercargill to Te Anau

Not much to report today. Started the morning at Simon’s house:

I got to use his internet connection to update the blog while Brenda and Jean went out to see the site of Invercargill.

They weren’t gone long.

Simon took a half day at work. When he got home and after we ate lunch we packed up to go to Te Anau – Maori for “Land of Spectacular Helicopter Rides” – and the gateway to “Fiordland” which I think might be a subsidiary of the Disney Corporation. We stopped in to visit his daugher Paula, her Paul and her two wee sons. They live in an old (like 100 years) house that they’re doing up with terrific results. They also have sheep, alpacas and assorted other animals.

Here’s the typical scenery we saw on the way to Te Anau:

The order of the day was to simply get there and meet up with Simon’s Sue at a “cribby” – what we’d call a “cabin” that Sue had organized for us from coworkers. It’s like an Oregon Coast holiday house that gets let out to people.

Sue works for the Department of Conservation and these folks often get sent away to work in the wilderness for good chunks of time, so it’s fairly common for them to sublet out their houses while they’re gone – which explains why we couldn’t just stay at Sue’s place as she had people there.

Sue’s daughter Jo came over and we had a nice relaxing dinner.

This brand of beer had an interesting plastic pop top:

I made a fun face out of my plate:

Dinner with Simon, Sue, Jo, Jean with Brenda behind the camera.
